MANILA, Philippines — Incidents of “overspeeding” along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) have significantly gone down by 50 percent after speed cameras were installed along these expressways.
NLEX Corp. vice president for technology Glenn Campos said that prior to the installation of the speed cameras, almost 500 “overspeeding” incidents occur daily.
“Ang taas po ng violations. Halos limang daan mahigit sa isang araw,” Campos said in a press conference in Quezon City.
“Pero matapos po ang isang taon mula nung ikinabit namin yung speed cameras sa NLEX at SCTEX, nakalahati na po ang mga nagva-violate ng ‘overspeeding’ dahil dito,” he added.
Campos also noted that a navigation smartphone app, Waze, informs motorists if there is a speed camera ahead, prompting drivers not to exceed the speed limit.
Motorists were reminded to follow the minimum speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour (kph) on all vehicles and a maximum of 100 kph for cars, and 80 kph for trucks and buses.
“Paalala lang po sa mga motorista ‘no, ang tollways po natin hindi po karerahan yan,” TRB Spokesperson Alberto Suansing said during the press conference.
“Nagme-maintain po tayo ng speed limit diyan sa loob ng tollways,” he added. /jpv
