MANILA, Philippines —Local government unit (LGU) ambulances should not bear the names or images of candidates in the May midterm elections,  Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said on Wednesday, two days before the official start of the campaign period for local candidates.

“LGU ambulances must not have names or pics of candidates. All candidates need not be given notices. They are violating election [rules] starting March 29,” Guanzon said in a tweet.

Guanzon urged Comelec personnel to take pictures of violations for documentation purposes.

Earlier, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said that political advertisements posted on public utility vehicles (PUV) are allowed as long as it complies with the rules set by the Comelec.

The LTFRB, however, noted that candidates and their supporters who wish to post campaign materials on PUVs should secure a permit and pay the required fees.

“Failure to abide by the specifications and standards provided under the memorandum has the minimum penalty of P10,000 fine with the maximum punishment of revocation of franchise,” the LTFRB warned.  / gsg
