DID YOU KNOW: 108th birth anniversary of novelist Bienvenido Santos
Today, March 22, is the 108th birth anniversary of novelist, poet, autobiographer, memoirist and essayist Bienvenido Santos.
Born in 1911 in Tondo, Manila, he divided his writing career between the United States and the Philippines.
His novel “The Praying Man” which is about political corruption, was banned by former President Ferdinand Marcos.
Santos went into voluntary exile in the United States and returned after the lifting of martial law in 1981.
After retirement, he became a visiting writer and artist at De La Salle University, a position he held until his death in 1996.
The university’s creative writing center was founded in his honor. —Patricia Gamboa, Inquirer Research junior intern
