MMDA to turn Metro concrete jungle into garden
THE METROPOLITAN Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has asked Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) for help in implementing a tree planting program in the Metro.
“I have requested the assistance of Ayala Land Inc. considering [its] expertise on re-greening as evidenced in the landscaping of their properties such as the Ayala Triangle,” MMDA Chair Francis Tolentino said in a statement on Tuesday.
Earlier, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said it would support the MMDA initiative by providing the agency with saplings and other plants, he added.
According to Tolentino, among the roads the MMDA was eyeing for its regreening project was Edsa.
At the same time, he urged residents to plant trees on their property, saying this would help the agency reach its other goal of curbing pollution.
Tolentino said the greening program was the offshoot of a resolution approved by the Metro Manila Council which recently organized the Metro Manila Re-Greening Committee. The body, chaired by Muntinlupa Mayor Aldrin San Pedro, was tasked to “study [the] implementation of the regreening activity” in consultation with Ayala Land Inc.
“We’re envisioning a new Metro Manila that has a uniform look, a ‘green’ look with thousands of trees and plants all over our major roads, parks, along waterways and all other open spaces,” the MMDA chair said.
