Mayon volcano erupts 6 times; alert level 2 stays

LEGAZPI CITY – Mount Mayon spewed ash six times on Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Thursday.

Paul Karson Alanis, Phivolcs Senior Science Research Specialist, said the “phreatic” or steam-driven eruptions took place “from 9:06 a.m., 9:39 p.m., 9:46 p.m., 9:55 p.m., 10 p.m., and 10:59 p.m. yesterday (March 13).”

The ash plumes from these eruptions rose 200 meters, 500 meters, 200 meters, 500 meters, 700 meters, and 300 meters above the summit, respectively, before drifting west.

Alanis said the agency also recorded six volcanic earthquakes and three rockfall events.
