Albayalde orders stricter vetting process for cops in drug units

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Oscar Albayalde has ordered stricter vetting procedures for members of the anti-drug teams of police units.

Albayalde issued the order after a few police officers assigned at the Drug Enforcement Units (DEUs) of different police stations were arrested for allegedly engaging in robbery-extortion activities and even kidnapping of suspects arrested over drugs.

“In a memorandum released this week, Albayalde reminded regional directors of all police regional offices to ensure that the selection and vetting procedures are properly observed in the activation and organization of Drug Enforcement Units in all levels with per quarter evaluation to assure credibility,” the PNP said in a statement on Wednesday.

Albayalde also ordered regional directors to supervise anti-illegal drugs operations, especially in the arrest of high-value targets and other suspects in their respective areas in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

“As we focus on the upcoming 2019 Midterm Elections, the PNP is also upgrading its well-sustained mechanism to intensify our relentless crusade against illegal drugs,” Albayalde said.

The PNP chief also reminded all unit commanders to supervise and monitor operations and activities of anti-illegal drug units against possible irregularities that often stain the image of the police force. /ee
