Two toddlers in Victoria, Australia, were found running across two lanes of a busy roadway after escaping from a childcare center.
The incident was captured on video and showed the two tots running across the 70 mph-Ballan Road and shocking drivers on Tuesday, March 12, as per The Age on the same day. The toddlers came from the Werribee West Family Center nearby.
Drivers stopped and got out of their cars just as the two children ran across the other lane.
“From what I could gather the two children were from a nearby daycare,” one witness, Andy, was quoted as saying. “The kids were in good spirits, waving at cars and saying hello. They didn’t seem upset.”
Andy said that trucks often travel on the road and that he stayed behind with other drivers to look after the children until staff arrived. He estimated the children were around 3 or 4 years old.
“I’m not going to speculate on how they got out as I don’t know [but] either way, it’s quite concerning,” he said. “From what I could tell staff were unaware of what had occurred, another motorist drove to the daycare to alert them. It was only then that staff came over and collected the kids.”
Meanwhile, an investigation is currently being conducted, as per the report. The incident has been referred to the Victorian Education and Training Department, which confirmed the said investigation.
“The health and safety of children in early childhood centers and schools is of utmost importance,” a department spokesman was quoted as saying.
“As the regulatory authority, the Department of Education and Training investigates incidents where children are unsupervised while attending early childhood services.” Cody Cepeda /ra
