2 flood control projects worth P90M completed in Samar

MANILA, Philippines — Two flood control projects in Calbayog City, Samar worth P90 million have been completed, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced Monday.

DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said the two flood control structures were constructed in the upstream portion of the Tinambacan River in Barangay Tinambacan Sur, Calabayog City to address the sudden rise of water during heavy rains.

The project included the construction of 145-lineal meters revetment complemented by a 33-lineal meter drainage and a 634-lineal meter structure on the other riverbank side.

Villar said the construction of the flood control structures amounted to P90 million.

“This project is vital as residents and their properties [located at the] flood-prone area are now protected,” Villar said in a statement.

During heavy rains, the Tinambacan River overflows and causes flooding in low-lying areas in the barangay, which can rise from 1.6 feet to 3.2 feet above the ground.

Before the flood control projects were completed, the local government in Barangay Tinambacan Sur had to construct a raised footbridge for the locals’ use. /ee
