Diokno asks PNP chief to assure safety of ‘EJK survivor’
MANILA, Philippines — Human rights lawyer Chel Diokno has called on Philippine National Police (PNP) chief General Oscar Albayalde to ensure the safety of “extrajudicial killing” survivor Roger Herrero.
In a series of tweets, Diokno said that Herrero was arrested by Agdangan police on Friday afternoon without a warrant during a hearing at the Lucena Prosecutor’s Office in compliance with a subpoena.
“His life is now in jeopardy for the second time,” Diokno, who is also seeking a Senate seat in the upcoming elections, said.
“I call upon PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde @odialbayalde to ensure the safety of Roger Herrero while he is under custody and to see to it that he is immediately released. @PNPPIO,” Diokno added in his Twitter account.
Herrero was shot by policemen in his face in Agdangan, Quezon last November 1, 2018 and was left behind when he played dead.
The bullet pierced his head and shattered his jaw. Concerned citizens brought him to a hospital and was able to recover from the incident.
Five policemen in Quezon province have been relieved from their posts over their alleged involvement in the case.
They were Insp. Wilson Mansion, Agdangan police chief, and his men namely SPO4 Wilson Villegas, SPO3 Noel Malabayabas, SPO2 Bryan Nobo and PO2 Jaymhar Espidido
The National Bureau of Investigation also filed before the Office of the Ombudsman a frustrated murder complaint against Villegas, Malabayabas, Nobo, Espidido, and their alleged cohort Franklin Pareja. /jpv
