DIMASALANG, Masbate, Philippines — Less than a month after election season began, a candidate for councilor in Cataingan town in Masbate province was shot dead Saturday night, police said Sunday.
Romeuel Medina, 40, and a former police officer running for town councilor in the coming May elections, was inside his house in Barangay (village) Poblacion when he was shot in the head at about 7 p.m.
The police report said that the unidentified gunman rode a Bajaj motorcycle to flee after shooting the victim.
Medina died while being taken to Cataingan District Hospital.
Police are looking into the possibility that the killing might be politically motivated. /cbb
