MANILA, Philippines — A 7-year-old boy found two grenades in a red backpack near a footbridge at the corner of Radial Road 10 and Capulong Street in Tondo, Manila, on Friday night, the Manila Police District reported.
The boy found the backpack, which contained an MK2 type fragmentation grenade and a rifle grenade, near the stairs of the footbridge on the southbound lane of Road 10.
The boy reported his discovery to a police officer assigned at the Border Security Checkpoint on Capulong Street.
Supt. Rex Arvin Malimban, acting chief of the District Mobile Force Battalion, safely recovered the rifle grenade.
However, the MPD Explosives and Ordnance Division, decided to explode, using a render safe procedure, the fragmentation grenade, which was inside a plastic bottle filled with ammunition.
Police recovered fragments the grenade, several rounds of live ammunition for a .45-caliber pistol and for a .30-caliber carbine. /atm
