Mercury levels dropped to 9.2 degrees Celsius at 5 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) in Manila said.

The temperature further dropped to 9.0 degrees Celsius at 6:30 a.m. according to Pagasa officials in the Summer Capital.

This was even lower from the previous record of 9.8 degrees last Monday in Baguio City.

The lowest temperature recorded in Baguio City was 6.3 degrees Celsius on Jan. 18, 1961.

The cold weather is due to the northeast monsoon, or hanging amihan, which currently affects the whole country.

Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Bicol Region, Aurora, Quezon and Oriental Mindoro will have cloudy skies with light rain.

The trough of a low pressure area will bring scattered rain and isolated thunderstorms over SOCCSKSARGEN, ARMM and Davao Occidental.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have fair weather with possible isolated light rain. /cbb
