Senate OKs magna carta for poor

A measure institutionalizing state intervention in curbing hunger and poverty moved a step closer to becoming law after the Senate on Tuesday approved it on third and final reading.

Authored by detained Sen. Leila de Lima, Senate Bill No. 2121, or the proposed Magna Carta of the Poor, was aimed at mandating the government to make it a state policy to “uplift the standard of living and quality of life of the poor.”

The bill also seeks to ensure the government’s compliance with international treaties “to end poverty in all its forms” and to “ensure and promote the health and well-being of all.” —Marlon Ramos
