Cops catch suspect in clerk’s killing

A suspect in the killing of a clerk who worked at the municipal hall of Taytay, Rizal province, has been arrested by the Quezon City police.

Joven Evasco, a 19-year-old water delivery boy, was caught by operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit at Barangay Cupang, Antipolo City, on Sunday, after footage taken by a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera linked him to the crime.

The body of the municipal clerk, Salvador Alcantara, was discovered on Jan. 20 by his nephew, Val Benedict Gonzales, in the victim’s apartment at Barangay Soccoro in Cubao.

He had been stabbed to death with an eight-inch kitchen knife. The bloodstained knief was found at the crime scene.

Coworkers identify suspect

Investigators who examined the CCTV footage saw the victim walking home with an unidentified man hours before his body was found.

The suspect was identified by his coworkers at a water station near the victim’s house.

The water delivery boys also told the police that Evasco had not reported for work since Jan. 19.

Quezon City policemen enlisted the help of the suspect’s colleagues to lure him to the area in Antipolo City where he was eventually arrested.

During questioning, Evasco admitted to killing and robbing Alcantara.

Seized from him was a receipt from a pawnshop where he had brought the victim’s cell phone after the killing.
