MANILA, Philippines — A rape suspect detained at the Malate Police Station was killed on Thursday night after reportedly grabbing the firearm of a policeman in his attempt to escape.

According to a report by the Manila Police District (MPD), suspect Benedicto Dizon allegedly grabbed the service firearm of PO1 Dennis Javier at 9:20 p.m. while at the Office of the Station Commander and fired at him, but missed.

This prompted Police Superintendent Bobby Ganipac to retaliate and shoot Dizon, who sustained two gunshot wounds on the chest.

Police said Dizon, 22, was rushed to the Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center in Malate but was declared dead on arrival at 10:15 p.m.
