MANILA, Philippines — Messages poured in for the country’s wealthiest man Henry Sy Sr. who was to be laid to rest on Thursday at the Heritage Park in Taguig City.

A Requiem Mass was also simultaneously officiated in all SM malls nationwide on Thursday.

“#ThankYouTatang” made it to the top Twitter trends in the Philippines with many supporters sending their messages to the mall magnate.

One netizen with Twitter handle @jeahcallo expressed admiration to Sy, saying “Every time our teachers asked us about the people whom we look up to, Henry Sy always earned the first spot. You will always be remembered, Tatang. #ThankYouTatang.”

Another netizen @yananatencia wrote in a tweet, “Henry Sy is a true testament that hard work pays off. #ThankYouTatang.”

Twitter user @Senyora, on the other hand, thanked Sy for the schools and classrooms he was able to establish.

“Sa dinami dami ng schools at classrooms na napatayo ni Henry Sy at sa mga nababasa kong istorya ng mga scholars niya, ang masasabi ko na lamang ay #ThankYouTatang,” the tweet read.

Netizen @linethbgn proudly said she was a scholar of SM: “Proud SM Isko here! couldn’t be more grateful. #ThankYouTatang.”

Another scholar @queeniejgm also paid tribute to Sy, saying “Your legacy lives on, not just through everything you’ve built, but through every single scholar whose dreams are now a reality, because of you.”

Meanwhile, netizen with handle @jyvcrpzz shared that her first job was a human resource assistant at SM, saying “My first job is in SM as HR Assistant. Ang laking tulong sa akin bilang fresh grad palang ako noon! #ThankYouTatang sa lahat lahat.”

Sy, 94, died “peacefully in his sleep” last Saturday, Jan. 19.

In 1946, he opened a small shoe store in Manila that eventually grew into a retail empire with 72 shopping malls that serves 3.5 million customers a day. /cbb
