MANILA, Philippines — The iconic globe of SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City radiated with colorful lights to honor its founder Henry Sy Sr.
The display says,“Thank You, Tatang,” referring to Sy, as he was fondly called by many.

In 1946, Sy opened a small shoe store in Manila that eventually grew into a retail empire with 72 shopping malls that serves 3.5 million customers a day.
On January 19, Sy passed away “peacefully in his sleep” at 94 years old.
