Manila hospital closes ER over suspected meningococcemia case

MANILA, Philippines — The emergency room of the Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center (GABMMC) in Tondo, Manila has been temporarily closed due to a suspected case of meningococcemia.

“The Emergency Room of Gabmmc is temporarily closed as part of standard safety procedure and infection control protocol because of a patient with suspected meningococcal infection,” the hospital said in a statement on Wednesday.

The GABMMC has assured that all precautionary measures have been implemented to prevent any risk of spread of infection.

Meanwhile, operations in other areas of the hospital including the out-patient department remain normal.

The hospital hopes to resume emergency room operation on Thursday.

Initial findings from the Department of Health (DOH) revealed that a 55-year-old patient from Sta. Ana, Manila showed symptoms of meningococcemia like fever and purpuric rashes on both feet.

Meanwhile, the DOH earlier announced that there is no meningococcemia outbreak nationwide.
