Gloria Arroyo: I just wanted to serve, I have peace of mind

MANILA, Philippines—Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said on Thursday she would face the future with peace of mind amid the criminal charges, including electoral sabotage, filed against her.

In an exclusive interview with GMA News’ Arnoldo Clavio on the eve of her transfer to a “detention” suite at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center, Arroyo accused the Aquino administration of having prejudged her and engaging in demagoguery.

“What I can say is that I have peace of mind. My conscience is clean,” Arroyo said in her interview.

“My only objective was to serve. Now, I am already prejudged by the new administration. They are even using demagoguery to vilify me completely. Of course, if I am vilified, he would look competent,” she added.

Nonetheless, Arroyo said she would keep on believing in the rule of law.

Asked for her thoughts on her predicament, Arroyo said she has been told by her father—former President Diosdado Macapagal—to do what’s right and “God will take care of the rest.”

Arroyo was interviewed at her suite at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Fort Bonifacio Global City in Taguig. She wasn’t wearing her neck brace during the main interview.

According to Clavio in a live report on “24 Oras” primetime news, Arroyo just smiled as a signal that she was declining from answering questions regarding specific details into the cases filed against her.
