According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, of the 238,637 registered live birth deliveries in the National Capital Region in 2017, 5,936 were assisted by traditional birth attendants or “hilot,” 53,345 by midwives, 614 by nurses, and 178,535 by physicians. There were 197 deliveries categorized as others and 10 that were not stated. The regions with the highest number of birth deliveries assisted by hilot were Calabarzon with 15,671 and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao with 15,976. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
