MANILA, Philippines — An Indonesian captive of the Abu Sayyaf in Sulu was released by the Abu Sayyaf Group on Tuesday, the military said.

Samsul Saguni, who was abducted off waters of Sabah in September 2018 was brought to the house of former Sulu Governor Abdul Sakur Tan in Barangay Poblacion in Maimbung town, said Western Mindanao Command spokesperson Lt. Col. Gerry Besana.

It was not immediately known whether ransom was paid.

The Indonesian was given a debriefing and a medical check-up at a military hospital in Jolo after his release.

Besana said Saguni was then brought to the Wesmincom headquarters in Zamboanga City.

Saguni and his companion Usman Yunos were aboard a fishing vessel when they were abducted last Sept 11. The latter escaped from the bandits last December.

The Abu Sayyaf is holding five other foreigners and three locals. /cbb
