MANILA, Philippines —A 6.0-magnitude earthquake shook a large area of Mindanao Wednesday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was located 117 kilometers (km) southeast of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, at 4:03 a.m.
The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 40 kilometers.
Phivolcs initially reported the quake at magnitude 5.9 as tectonic in origin with a depth of 114 kilometers.
The US Geological Survey pegged the quake at magnitude 5.7.
It was felt in the following intensities:
Intensity IV: Davao City; Mati City; Santa Josefa, Agusan del Sur
Intensity III: Digos City; Alabel, and Malungon, Sarangani; Manay, Davao Oriental;
Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur
Intensity II: General Santos City; Tupi, South Cotabato; Glan, Kiamba, and Malapatan, Sarangani;
Makilala, Cotabato
Intensity I: Gingoog City
Philvolcs said this was an aftershock of the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck Davao Oriental on Dec. 29.
No damage was expected.
The eastern part of Davao Oriental is within the 1,200-kilometer long Philippine Fault, a seismically-active fault line that has generated significant earthquakes in the past. /cbb/muf
