05:00 AM January 16, 2019

Autism Consciousness Week is observed every third week of January by virtue of Proclamation No. 711 signed on Jan. 4, 1996 by then President Fidel Ramos.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurological disorder typically appearing in late infancy or early childhood, a developmental disability characterized by social and communication deficits that impede optimal functioning.

According to the Department of Health, at least 1 million Filipinos have been diagnosed with autism. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
