A man in Vacaville, California was arrested for allegedly stealing his roommate’s $10 million (around P521.8 million) winning lottery ticket.
The Vacaville Police Department nabbed 35-year-old Adul Saosongyang for the crime on Monday, Jan. 7, when he tried to cash in the winnings. This was revealed in a Facebook post by the police department on Wednesday, Jan. 9.
The post said that a shopper, who was unidentified, purchased a lottery ticket for $30 (around P1,500) at his local grocery store last Dec. 20. When he scratched it off, he initially thought he won $10,000 (almost $522,000).
When he got home, he excitedly told his two roommates about his luck. However, he found out that his ticket had been altered when he tried to collect his winnings at the Lottery’s District Office in Sacramento.
He then suspected one of his roommates stole the ticket while he was sleeping, and quickly reported to authorities about the theft.
Saosongyang was caught the next day when he tried to cash in the ticket. He found out that the prize was not just $10,000 but actually $10 million.
After further investigation by a lottery investigator and detective police department, it also found that Saosongyang purchased a similar ticket, had it altered and swapped with the original ticket.
The suspect is currently booked to Sacramento County Jail and will be transferred to the Solano County Jail later this week. NVG
