1 dead in Laguna; hundreds forced to evacuate

SAN PEDRO CITY — Incessant rains triggered by the low pressure area forced hundreds to seek shelter at evacuation centers in Laguna province, the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC) said Monday.

Avelino Balanay, 84, was reported drowned in Barangay J. Rizal in Sta. Maria town.

In Barangay Duhat, Cavinti, a fallen coconut tree hit a vehicle although no one was reported hurt. A landslide also occurred along the provincial road in Barangay Balayong, Nagcarlan.

The DRRMC said 60 families (238 persons) sought shelter in evacuation centers after floods hit the towns of Los Baños, Bay, Calauan, Liliw, and the citiea of Calamba and San Pablo.

Power outages were reported in parts of Sta. Cruz, Pagsanjan, Siniloan, Magdalena, and Majayjay.

In a separate report, the Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon (Calabarzon) police said 13 houses were damaged in Mauban, Quezon. /ee
