MANILA, Philippines–The Department of Health (DOH) urged parents and guardians to be extra careful in handling firecrackers around children.

Health Undersecretary Eric Domingo made the call after a six-year-old child was hospitalized for ingesting a “pili firecracker” last Wednesday.

He said the child is currently undergoing treatment at the Philippine General Hospital.

Last Dec. 24, a three-year-old girl also ingested a firecracker.

From Dec. 21 to 6 a.m. of Dec. 27, there are already 27 firecracker-related injuries. Of the 27 incidents, four ended in amputations while nine cases involved eye injuries.

This year’s record is 32 cases lower as compared to the same period in 2017.  /muf
