A Montana man shot someone who was target-shooting for one bizarre reason—he mistook him as the subject of North American folklore, “Bigfoot.”

A 27-year-old unidentified man came forward to authorities on Monday saying the suspect shot him a day before. He had been putting up targets on public lands outside the city when bullets started flying at him, reports The Idaho Statesman.

The man said one bullet hit close to his left foot, while another almost to his right. He hid by the trees to take cover, then got out to confront a man who had a F-150 gun in hand.

“I thought you were Bigfoot,” the shooter said, according to Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton. “I don’t target practice—but if I see something that looks like Bigfoot, I just shoot at it.”

Dutton told the paper that the man advised him to wear orange so that he would not be shot and mistaken for “Bigfoot” again.

While Dutton said that the veracity of the man’s report was questionable—since the shooter was not described—another woman came forward and said she too was almost hit by the shooter’s bullet.

“We’re working to find this person,” Dutton said in the report.  “It is of great concern that this individual might think it’s okay to shoot at anything he thinks is Bigfoot.”

If found, Dutton said the shooter could face negligent homicide charges.  Katrina Hallare /ra
