IN AN attempt to reduce crime in the city, Caloocan Mayor Enrico Echiverri has ordered the strict implementation of a recently approved ordinance which bans drinking in public places, particularly in the streets.
Ordinance No. 0937 prohibits the consumption of alcohol and rowdy merrymaking out in the open which, more often than not, result in violence in an area known for the proliferation of petty crimes.
According to the mayor, the ban on public drinking will reduce criminal cases since most of the time, those who get involved in these situations have been drinking beforehand.
He added, however, that people would be allowed to drink publicly on special occasions such as birthdays, wedding anniversaries, Christmas and New Year provided they get permission from barangay officials at least a week before the event.
Violators face between two months to one year of imprisonment or a fine ranging from P1,000 to P5,000 depending on the court’s discretion, Echiverri said.
He added that the ordinance would be strictly enforced by the city police and barangay officials.
“With the strict implementation of this ordinance, we can expect fewer street fights, brawls and crimes in our streets,” Echiverri said.
