Enrile: Not much has changed in Philippine politics

MANILA, Philippines — Politicians will not show their true colors in front of the public eye.

Former Senator Juan Pone Enrile said this on Wednesday when asked if there have been changes in the game of politics in the country.

The senator said politicians would not show their negative side to the public and would always put their best foot forward.

“Pareho lang. Nagpapasikat sa madla, ganon pa rin (Nothing has changed. They would impress the public. It’s still the same),” Enrile made the statement when he guested at Bandera’s “Tusok Tusok” session.

“Ako magaling. Ako honest. Ako matalino. Ako.. Hindi sasabihin na ako demonyo (I’m good, honest, intelligent. Nobody would say ‘I’m the devil’),” he added.

Enrile, who was allegedly involved in a pork barrel scam with two ex-senators, was charged with plunder at the anti-graft court of the Sandiganbayan.

He was, however, allowed to post bail amounting to P1 million by the Supreme Court  P1 million in consideration of his old age.

Former Senator Bong Revilla was one of the senators involved in the alleged misuse of their pork barrel or the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), the lump-sum funds previously allocated to legislators.

He was recently acquitted of plunder by the Sandiganbayan and ordered released.

When asked for comment on Revilla’s case, Enrile opted not to answer.

“I will not make any judgment. I’m a lawyer. I am governed by ethics rule,” he said.

Enrile also dodged questions if he is hoping the court would also acquit him over his alleged involvement in the pork barrel scam.

Both Revilla and Enrile are seeking re-election as  senator in the upcoming midterm elections. /ee
