MANILA, Philippines — The House of Representatives on Monday passed a bill requiring all public and private schools in the country to provide armchairs for left-handed people.
With a unanimous vote of 207, the lower chamber approved House Bill No. 8654 on third and final reading.
Antipolo City 1st Dist. Rep. Cristina Roa-Puno, the principal author of the bill, said the intent of the measure was “to promote equal development of students.”
Section 3 of HB 8654 states it should be “obligatory for all educational institutions, both public and private, to provide the appropriate armchairs for left-handed students, equivalent to at least 10 percent of the student population.”
The bill also puts to task the Department of Education, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, and Commission on Higher Education to craft implementing rules and regulations once the measure is enacted into law. /kga
