SAN PEDRO CITY — A man facing illegal drug charges was rearrested on Sunday in Alfonso town in Cavite province, a year after he led a jailbreak in this city.

Supt. Giovannie Martinez, the city police chief, said Mark Joseph Varias, 27, was recaptured around 12:45 p.m. in Barangay (village) Kaytitinga 3.

Martinez said Varias went into hiding and transferred locations in Cavite province for a year.

Varias reportedly led a jailbreak on May 22 last year by cutting the steel bars of the police’s detention cell here. He and five detainees escaped.

The break led to the relief of the former city police chief and two other jail guards. /je
