The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Thursday came to the defense of its vice president, Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, following President Duterte’s allegations that the prelate stole church donations and may have been involved in illegal drugs.
In a statement, CBCP president and Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles said the prelates expressed sadness over Mr. Duterte’s recent accusations that put David in a bad light.
“Many, including myself, are saddened and disturbed by recent statements made against Bishop Pablo David—statements that alleged that Bishop David had committed actions that question his integrity. Bishop David has already answered clearly and equally all these allegations,” Valles said.
Valles, a close friend of the President, said all bishops could vouch for the integrity of David.
Dedicated shepherd
“Very many of us bishops have come to know Bishop David as a very good bishop, a dedicated shepherd and father of his flock in the Diocese of Caloocan,” he said.
“He is very passionate in his ministry, bringing mercy and compassion, especially to the poor and suffering among his people,” Valles added.
The Davao prelate urged the faithful to pray for David.
“Let us pray in a special way for Bishop David that the Lord grant him more strength, as well as calmness and peace in this difficult situation,” Valles said.
