SWS: 1.4M Filipino families victimized by common crimes in past 6 months
An estimated 1.4 million Filipino families (6.1 percent) reported that they were victimized by common crimes in the past six months, the latest Social Weather Station (SWS) survey showed.
This is a 0.7 point increase from the 5.3 percent or 1.2 Filipino families who reported the same in the previous quarter ended June 2018.
Survey results released by the pollster on Thursday showed that 6.1 percent of families reported “victimization by any of the common crimes,” including pickpocket, robbery of personal property, break-ins, carnapping, and physical violence.
The September 2018 survey was conducted from September 15-23, 2018 using face-to-face interviews of 1,500 adults (18 years old and above) nationwide.
There were 600 respondents in Balance Luzon, and 300 each in Metro Manila, Visayas, and Mindanao.
It has a sampling margin of error of ±3 percent for national percentages, ±4 percent for Balance Luzon, and ±6 percent each for Metro Manila, Visayas, and Mindanao).

Property crimes
The survey data also revealed that an estimated 1.3 million families (5.6 percent) reported victimization by property crimes within the past six months.
For pickpockets or street robbery, the survey showed that 4.6 percent or an estimated 1.1 families are affected.
For break-ins, the survey found that 2.0 percent or 474,000 families said they were victimized by break-ins.
Meanwhile, among families owning any type of vehicle, the poll data found that an estimated 50,000 families had their vehicles stolen or taken.
The survey also showed that 0.7 percent or an estimated 159,000 families have members who were victims of physical violence
Fear of burglary, fear of unsafe streets, and presence of drug addicts
The survey also found that 52 percent of Filipino adults agree that people in their respective neighborhoods usually fear that robbers might break into their house.
Meanwhile, 46 percent of the respondents agree that people in their respective neighborhoods are usually afraid to walk on the street at night because it is not safe.
The poll data also showed that 41 percent of the respondents agree that in their respective neighborhoods “there are already very many people addicted to banned drugs.”
