A plebe at the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) was recently arrested for alleged attempted rape.
Mark Vincent Segay was arrested on Nov. 5 for an attempted rape that allegedly happened before he entered the academy, Chief Supt. Benigno Durana Jr., spokesperson of the Philippine National Police (PNP) told INQUIRER.net Tuesday.
A Palawan court issued the arrest warrant on Segay on Oct. 15, Durana said.
He added that Segay might have already posted bail.
Durana said the incident showed a weakness in the vetting process of future police officers by the Philippine Public Safety College (PPSC), since it was not able to track the alleged crime before Segay was admitted to the academy.
According to Durana, individuals with pending cases are not allowed to be admitted to the PNPA.
The PNP has been seeking the takeover of the academy to better train future police officers as part of the preventive measures in its internal cleansing program.
The PNPA is now under the PPSC of the Department of the Interior and Local Government.
Earlier, three cadets were also implicated in an alleged sexual assault inside the PNPA.
A cadet allegedly forced two plebes to perform oral sex as punishment for not obeying order, while two other cadets only allegedly watched the incident, which allegedly happened on Oct. 6. /atm
