Super Ferry 1 runs aground off Palawan, rescue vessels sent

MANILA, Philippines–The BRP Edsa Dos and two other sea vessels were sent to rescue 618 passengers aboard the Super Ferry 1 which ran aground near Ditaytay Island between Coron and Puerto Princesa in Palawan, the PCG spokesman said Monday.

PCG spokesman Lt Cdr Algier Ricafrente said the ship, Super Ferry 1, ran aground 11:15 p.m. Sunday, but the report reached the Coast Guard only at 3 a.m.

The Coast Guard Station in Coron immediately dispatched the BRP Edsa Dos, the MV Balton Pearl and the MV Catilen-E to rescue the passengers, 41 of which are reportedly children, Ricafrente said.

He said Super Ferry 1 was on its way to Coron Island from Puerto Princesa when it ran aground.
