TACLOBAN CITY – A member of a paramilitary unit was killed while another was wounded after their detachment in San Jorge, Samar was attacked by an armed group believed to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA) Sunday (Nov.18) night.

Captain Francis Agno, spokesperson of the 8th Infantry Division based in Catbalogan City, also in Samar, identified the casualty as Enrico Sanico, who died on the spot. His companion, Jose Casaljay, suffered an injury.

Agno said both belonged to the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit-Active Auxiliaries (Cafgu-Caa) based in Barangay Buenavista 1, San Jorge, about five kilometers from their command post of 63rd Infantry Brigade located in Barangay Erenas in the said town.

About 50 NPA members staged the attack at 11:42 p.m. which resulted in a firefight that lasted for 30 minutes.

The rebels were said to have withdrawn to different directions and reportedly put up a blocking force and planted improvised explosive devices along the road fronting the Buenavista National High School, the spokesperson of the 8th ID said.

Members of the 63rd IB, under Lt.Col. Rizaldo Laurena, together with the local police, immediately conducted an operation against the alleged rebel members.
