CHR hails approval of Senate bill on funds for Marcos martial law victims
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) hailed Tuesday a Senate panel’s approval of a bill extending the validity and availability of funds for victims of rights abuses under the Marcos dictatorship.
Earlier, the Senate justice and human rights committee approved Senate Joint Resolution No. 13 filed by Sens. Francis Escudero and Ralph Recto extending the availability of funds for the indemnification of rights abuse victims until December 2019.
Sen. Richard Gordon, chairman of the committee, also asked his colleagues to approve the measure without amendments through his committee report filed on Oct. 10.

With this, CHR said it would continue to pursue efforts to guarantee that martial victims would be granted the right to get compensation and recognition.
“On our part, the Commission continues to push for efforts in favour of remedies that would grant victims of the dictatorship the reparation and acknowledgement they deserve,” lawyer Jacqueline de Guia, CHR spokesperson, said in a statement.
The CHR recalled that the House of Representatives passed its version of the joint resolution in August 2018. /atm
