Violent seas spawned by Typhoon ‘Rosita’ have prevented interisland vessels from traveling to and from most of Luzon, stranding almost 2,000 passengers, according to the Coast Guard on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 218 AFP FILE
About 2,000 passengers were stranded in different ports on Tuesday morning due to unfavorable sea conditions brought by Typhoon “Rosita,” the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.
Data released by the PCG say that as of 4 a.m., a total of 1,937 passengers were affected by the grounding of interisland passenger vessels.
According to the PCG, a total of 1,873 of stranded passengers were in ports in Southern Luzon.
The PCG also monitored 53 passengers prevented from traveling at the port of Camarines Sur in Bicol.
Meanwhile, a total of 11 passengers were stuck in the ports in Aklan and Cagayan in the Western Visayas and in northeastern Luzon, respectively.
In a separate advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issued storm surge warnings over six provinces of the country.
Pagasa said 2- to 3-meter-high storm surges could be expected in Isabela, La Union and Pangasinan due to Rosita. These areas were under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3.
Meanwhile, 1- to 2-meter high storm surges were expected in the provinces of Ilocos Sur and Aurora. Both were also under Signal No. 3.
Rosita made landfall in Dinapigue, Isabela, at 4 a.m. It had maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 210 kph. /cbb
