Water supply in metro in next 5 years assured

Water security is assured in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces under the coverage area of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the next five years at least or even until 2037.

MWSS administrator Reynaldo Velasco gave the assurance even as he disclosed other possible water sources that would provide the additional water requirements of the MWSS service area.

“Our assurance to the public is that there will be adequate water supply in the next five years until the end of the concession agreement,” Velasco said during the maiden Real News Forum at Rolando’s Farm to Table Restaurant in Quezon City.

According to Velasco, MWSS has identified projects that could be undertaken within the duration of President Duterte’s term. Potential water sources are the Laguna Lake, Sumag River, Tayabasan River and Wawa River.

The Wawa Dam project, which was proposed by businessman Oscar Violago, involves the construction of an 82-meter dam in Montalban in Rizal province that could produce 500 milliliters per day to augment water coming from Angat Dam.

International Container Terminal Services Inc. owner Enrique Razon has expressed interest in the project and has partnered with Violago.

A feasibility study on the project is being undertaken and expected to be done in six months.

The MWSS board would do an audit review of the study and approve it.
