Police have arrested a man who allegedly tried to assassinate House Majority Leader Rolando Andaya Jr. after he filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for governor of Camarines Sur province on Tuesday.

In a statement, Andaya on Wednesday said the supposed gunman, Ray John Musa, was taken into custody by the police after he dropped an unlicensed .38-caliber revolver, which he allegedly tried to use in shooting the outgoing Camarines Sur representative.

“If they think this will make me cower in fear, they are wrong. There’s no turning back for me,” Andaya said.

He said one of his security aides, Samuel Alforte, and Lupi town Mayor Roberto Matamorosa subdued Musa after the firearm fell on the ground.

Andaya did not identify who could be behind the purported attempt on his life but surmised that Musa was “acting on orders of powerful political figures” in the province.
