3 alleged robbers killed in shootout with Manila cops

MANILA, Philippines — Three alleged robbers were killed in a shootout with police before dawn on Friday in Manila, officials said.

Senior Superintendent Alex Gutierrez, chief of the Manila Police District, said the suspects held up a jeepney in Lawton, Manila at around 4 a.m.

In a separate interview with Radyo Inquirer 990AM, Manila Police District-Station 5 chief Superintendent Ricardo Layug said the suspects boarded a jeepney at the corner of Pedro Gil and Taft Avenue.

The victims sought the help of policemen, who chased the alleged robbers until they were cornered at Muelle del Rio, Ermita,  Layug said.

Recovered were two caliber .38 handguns, a gun replica, and the wallets, mobile phones and jewelry stolen from passengers of the jeepney.

The suspects have yet to be identified by police, added Gutierrez.

The MPD chief said that they have fanned out anti-crime units to areas such as Lawton  where robberies were considered prevalent.

Meanwhile, a man was shot by still unidentified assailant at the LRT station in Baclaran.
