CITY OF MALOLOS — A Christian organization paraded around Bulacan towns and cities on Saturday to urge voters and candidates in next year’s polls to keep the elections “honest,” saying that good governance and an end to corruption were key to improving society.
Around 50 vehicles carrying 150 Bulacan members of the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals (BCBP) staged the provincial leg of a nationwide campaign for honest elections.
Everyone wore shirts printed with the phrase: “Be Honest. Even if others are not. Even if others will not. Even if others cannot.”
Gaine Dusaban, who heads the BCBP Bulacan chapter, said the “Be Honest” advocacy was timed to coincide with the start of the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC), which began on Thursday.
“We want to encourage everyone to be honest not just in thoughts but in their hearts. Our future leaders who will govern us should be the first to express honesty, and so should our voters,” he said. “When a leader is honest, he will not commit lies and corruption,” Dusaban added.
It was the same message BCBP delivered last year when its members staged a nationwide walkathon.
The Bulacan motorcade visited the towns of Calumpit, Hagonoy, Paombong, Marilao, Bocaue, Balagtas, Guiguinto, Sta. Maria, Pandi, Plaridel and Meycauayan City after assembling at the Malolos City Sports and Convention Center.
As of Sunday, only a handful of politicians have filed their COCs. The filing period will end on Wednesday (Oct. 17). /ee
