Former Makati Mayor Junjun Binay said his sister Abby Binay, who is the incumbent Makati Mayor, showed a “sign of desperation” after suggesting that he should settle his corruption cases first before deciding to run in the 2019 polls.
“It’s a sign of desperation. Wala naman akong dahilan para hindi tumakbo. Hindi pa final and executory ‘yung mga cases. In fact, ‘yung isa na-reverse na,” he told reporters on Friday.
(It’s a sign of desperation. I don’t have a reason not to run. The cases are not yet final and executory. In fact, one of it was already reversed.)
Junjun Binay accompanied his sister, Senator Nancy Binay, as she filed her certificate of candidacy at the main office of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to run for another term at the Senate.
“Hindi pa kami umaabot sa Supreme Court. Why would she say that? Parang ito na lang ‘yung way para manalo ang kapatid ko, na hindi ako tumakbo?” he added.
(We have not yet reached the Supreme Court. Why would she say that. It seems this is the only way for my sister to win, that I won’t run?)
His counsel and former Comelec chair Sixto Brillantes also said that Junjun Binay can still run for the 2019 elections amid corruption cases being linked to him when he was still Makati mayor.
“Hindi pa final, so walang ground for disqualification. Ganoon lang kadali ‘yun (It’s not final, so there is no ground of disqualification. It’s that easy),” Brillantes said.
Junjun Binay, however, said that they have yet to wait for their parents former Vice President Jejomar Binay and Elenita to return to the country before he can settle the issue with her sister.
His parents are at a pilgrimage in Italy and are set to return to the country over the weekend. /je
