Student dies after being struck by lightning in Leyte

TACLOBAN CITY—A 13-year-old boy was killed after he was struck by lightning on Wednesday afternoon when he and his classmates were gardening at the back of their school in Bato town, Leyte.

Richard Nabor, a Grade 7 student of the Bato School of Fisheries, was declared dead on arrival when he was brought at the Leyte Baptist Hospital in nearby Hilongos town, said Senior Insp. Emy Maceda, Bato police chief, in a phone interview.

“He and his classmates were gardening in their school when a lightning struck and hit him. His classmates all scampered for safety,” Maceda said.

The police official said the principal of the Bato School of Fisheries, Richard Gabison, told them that the incident happened at 1 p.m.

The burnt body of the teenager was later brought to their house in Barangay Tabunok, Bato town, Maceda said.

According to Maceda, the town of Bato experienced some thunderstorms on that day. /jpv
