Seven of every 10 Filipinos are not in favor of imposing the death penalty on a number of “serious” crimes, a survey by Social Weather Stations (SWS) released on Wednesday showed.

The preference for capital punishment was higher, at 47 percent, for the crime of rape while under the influence of illegal drugs, according to the survey, which was conducted in March for the Commission on Human Rights.

Human Rights Commissioner Karen Gomez-Dumpit said the results of the survey  reaffirmed the commission’s position opposing the reimposition of death penalty. —Melvin Gascon
