Inmates safe after fire hits New Bilibid Prison — report

Inmates at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City were reported safe after a fire hit the detention facility on Wednesday morning,  according to an incident report submitted by the Bureau of Corrections to the Department of Justice.

All 5,820 inmates were accounted for and in good condition after the handicrafts area at the medium security compound was affected by the fire, the report said.

There were no casualties or injuries reported among the inmates. Moreover, no other building was damaged.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) reported that the fire hit the handicrafts area at  2:58 a.m. The fourth alarm 36 minutes later.

At 6:52 a.m., the BFP declared the fire under control. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. /ee
