LTFRB to push through with PUV modernization

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chair Martin Delgra categorically assured Transport Secretary Arthur Tugade on Wednesday that the implementation of the public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program will push through.

“Allow us to state categorically that the PUV Modernization Program is a go. It is currently being implemented, as it is happening now. Not in another decade, but now,” Delgra said in a statement.

Despite his admission that implementing the said project is a hard task, the LTFRB chair said he thinks the project would benefit a lot of jeepney drivers.

“Walang duda, mahirap po ito. Marami ang kontra at nag-aalinlangan. Pero sa tingin ko naman po, mas maraming makikinabang (There is no doubt, this is difficult. There are many groups who oppose this, but I think this will benefit people),” he said.

“Maybe some sectors do not see the urgent need in this now, as it is natural for people to fight change, but they will see the full benefits and beauty soon enough,” Delgra added.

Delgra admitted on Monday during a Senate hearing that the government is not ready for a total phaseout of old jeepneys. /ee
