The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Tuesday welcomed a House committee report on the secret detention cell found last year inside a police station in Tondo, Manila.
“The Commission on Human Rights welcomes the adoption of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Human Rights report on the case of Manila Police District (MPD), starting with the most important fact: recognizing that MPD’s Raxabago Police Station 1 maintained a secret detention cell,” CHR Commissioner Karen Gomez-Dumpit said in a statement.

Gomez-Dumpit issued the statement after the House Committee on Human Rights approved on Tuesday a draft panel report on the discovery of the secret detention cell at the Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) of the Raxabago police station in Tondo in April last year.
The House committee has also recommended the filing of charges against the erring policemen from the said police station under the command of Supt. Robert Domingo, based on the recommendation of the CHR in a letter-complaint to the Office of the Ombudsman.
Gomez-Dumpit urged the Philippine National Police (PNP) to identify errant cops who violate and abuse their power.
“We call on the PNP to genuinely clean its ranks from abusive cops who violate their own oath “to serve and protect” the Filipino people,” the CHR said. /ee
