SUBIC BAY FREEPORT – A 69-year-old retired US Navy serviceman was found bludgeoned to death on Monday inside his house at the Binictican Heights in this free port.
Sonny Almazan was apparently beaten to death with a golf club, which was found with bloodstains inside his bedroom, said a report from the Investigation Division of the Law Enforcement Department of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA-LED).
Investigators on Tuesday said two unidentified women were being eyed as persons of interest.
Almazan’s driver Renato Barbadillo told investigators Almazan had directed him to fetch the two women from the Kalaklan Gate about 9 p.m. on Sunday.
The SBMA-LED said Almazan and Barbadillo were at a bakery near a Freeport Mall between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the time.
Barbadillo was instructed to leave Almazan alone with the women about 10 p.m.
Barbadillo reported for work at Almazan’s quarters in Binictican on Monday, entering the house through the front door that he found unlocked.
Once inside, Barbadillo reportedly observed bloodstains on the floor leading to Almazan’s bedroom.
“When he (Barbadillo) saw more bloodstains on the floor and walls inside the bedroom, he reportedly sought the help of neighbors to contact the SBMA Police for assistance,” the SBMA-LED report said.
Investigators who arrived at the crime scene found Almazan slumped in a sitting position on the floor, beside an upturned computer. The slain man was naked from the waist down and was covered with blood.
Investigators took note of bloody footprints at the bedroom floor, a golf club and a metal cane with bloodstains, and broken liquor bottles.
Almazan’s mobile telephone and a sling bag believed to contain cash were reportedly missing.
During the investigation, Barbadillo identified the women from security camera footage at Kalaklan Gate which was recorded at 9:25 p.m.
He told the police that one of the women, who has a tattoo on her right thigh, had previously been in the company of his employer.
The Morong town police in Bataan, which has jurisdiction over Binictican, has assumed jurisdiction over the homicide case. Allan Macatuno and Joanna Aglibot
