DIGOS CITY – A member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed during an encounter with soldiers belonging to the 73rd Infantry Battalion in Sitio Mahayag, Upper Suyan in Malapatan, Sarangani town.
Lt. Colonel Marion Angcao, commander of the 73rd IB (PA) identified the slain NPA rebel as Jimmy Ambat, a member of NPA “Yunit Milisya” (YUMIL) of Guerrilla Front 71, Far South Mindanao Region (FSMR).
In a belated report, the Army said on October 5 that a concerned citizen tipped them off about the presence of five NPA communist fighters conducting harassment and extortion activities in the area, prompting the troops to scour the area.
However, the report said before reaching the site volume of fire met the government forces that sparked the firefight that lasted for several minutes.
When the battle was over, the search and clearing operation team found the lifeless body of Ambat where they also recovered one caliber 30 M1 Garand rifle.
No soldier was hurt during the firefight.
Brigadier General Roberto Ancan, Commander of 1002nd Brigade called on the NPA to return to the fold of law. “Various benefits are enhanced to support you and your families especially when you surrender and lay down your firearms,” he said.
Major General Noel S. Clement, commander of the 10th Infantry Division, commended the troops’ accomplishment. “We thank the people of Malapatan for their timely information. Your continued support is essential in maintaining peace and order not only in Sarangani but all of our communities within 10th ID’s area of responsibility.”
